Happy May Day!

In the interests of diversity, let me be the first to wish all my readers of the red variety a Happy May Day.

Today in History:

1889: May 1 chosen by socialist congress meeting in Paris as the date to demonstrate for an eight-hour working day. Afterward May 1 became a labour day holiday in many countries.

1948: Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, known as North Korea, is established.

1961: Cuban leader Fidel Castro declares the country a socialist nation and abolishes elections.

Hip Hip Hooray!
