The Devil you Know

Richard Alston is a pretty poor excuse for a Communications Minister, but you have to worry what Labor would do in their place:

THE Federal Government has refused to tell the Nine Network to broadcast an AFL match live-to-air after Labor complained footy fans were missing out.

Opposition communications spokesman Lindsay Tanner said this Friday night’s AFL clash between the Adelaide Crows and the Kangaroos would be on late night delayed telecast for fans in the ACT, Gold Coast and other areas.

“The Howard Government has failed to fix the AFL broadcasting mess,” Mr Tanner said.

It’s only the internet that Alston wants to control. Labor, obviously not satisfied with the agitprop of the ABC, wants control over all TV stations.

Communications Minister Richard Alston’s office said the Government would not tell the broadcaster what to air.

“They have to operate on a commercial basis,” Senator Alston’s spokesman said.

“The Government is not in the business of being a TV programmer.”

It’s pretty sad that politicians have to be continually reminded that businesses exist to make a profit.
