America & Homos

The United States’ insane level of religion-fueled social conservatism shows no signs of abating anytime soon. Here’s a choice selection from the pantheon of absurdity that is the “gay rights” debate in the US.

In October of 2001 an 18-year-old man named Matthew Limon was convicted of consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old boy. Under Kansas’s “Romeo and Juliet” laws, the maximum penalty for consensual sex with a minor between the ages of 14 and 16 is 15 months as long as the offender is no more than four years older. At least, that would have been the case if Matthew’s partner had been female. The law doesn’t apply to homosexual sex, so Matthew got *cough* 17 years. Eminently reasonable, I think you’ll agree. The last thing we want is young faggots walking freely about our streets.

Matthew’s case has been brought before the Kansas Court of Appeals by the ACLU and we’re getting treated to some spectacularly stupid arguments from the prosecution:

“I’m just trying to come up with a reason, other than you don’t like homosexuals,” Kansas Court of Appeals Judge Joseph Pierron told Deputy Atty. Gen. Jared Maag, who was representing the state.

But Maag said the state Legislature had broad authority to approve of such disparities in sentencing in order to promote “traditional sexual roles.”

The state argued the reasons for different punishments of similar sex acts was to promote marriage, encourage procreation and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Ah yes, the deterrent effect. Good thinking, guys. But ignore for a moment the general stupidity of such lawmaking and look at the specifics: the State is arguing they need this law to promote marriage and procreation. For a law concerning minors? Nice one.
