What Were The Options Again?

Congressman Silvestre Reyes is confused:

Reyes stumbled when I asked him a simple question about al Qaeda at the end of a 40-minute interview in his office last week… The dialogue went like this:

Al Qaeda is what, I asked, Sunni or Shia?

“Al Qaeda, they have both,” Reyes said. “You’re talking about predominately?”

“Sure,” I said, not knowing what else to say.

“Predominantly — probably Shiite,” he ventured.

Reyes is the new head of the House Intelligence Committee.

The war on terrorism in Australia may be entering a critical phase:

    1. The Shia v’s Sunni civil war spreading to Australia and
    2. Islamic Extremists being reinvigorated by the sight of US/Brit/Aust forces suffering in Iraq.

The Australian military must be pulled out of Iraq, rested, reequipped, and prepared for the move north into the arc of instability to ensure peace in the region.

ASIO is trying to expand from 600 to a 1,000 staff, it is attempting to recruit people with the necessary skills from other departments, but as ASIO’s salaries and wages are so pitiful low results it is not succeeding. ASIO’s own director acknowledges a significant turnover of the few staff it is able to recruit as they move onto better work.

Most people don’t realise that most custom officers in Border Security are part timers who are trained for six months, payed a pittance and then leave in droves to make a living wage elsewhere. A few old timers, who are full time employees, keep the show going but at the cost of efficiency.

The Australian Federal Police is probably the most experienced and knowledgeable in the fight against terrorism, dating back to its work against the Ustashi in the1970’s. Its budget is overstretched by community policing, national and overseas postings.

In the end we are dependent on the poor bloody plods in the state police forces,. They have a hard enough time maintaining law and order without having to fight Islamic terrorism on their own.
