T.T

One of the unfortunate facts of life for those of us who like Asian girls is that Asian parents are not usually all that keen on the idea of their daughter dating a foreigner. So it’s usually a well-kept secret. And when the secret gets out, the shit hits the fan:

When I come to Korea I often stay with HH. Unlike most unmarried Korean girls HH lives alone and so there are no parents to dodge. But like all good Korean girls she can’t let her mum know that she is letting an evil pegin (white guy) stay at her house.

During the week HH leaves early for work while I laze about, go and get something to eat and eventually use her computer to do some blogging and/or work. But today her mum decided to pay her a surprise visit and much to her surprise she found me at the house! Opps.

Now there’s trouble. Mum is angry at HH and I have been banished until peace can be restored. So now that my plans for a peaceful and relaxing couple of weeks have been disrupted I have to find a new place to stay and a new plan.

Perhaps John’s new plan should be getting the hell out of Korea before the racial purity police come knocking on his door. Or this guy.

  1. That was quick. But I should clarify… HH’s mum would have been unhappy whether I was white or Korean. The problem is that I am staying at her house (and probably getting up to all sorts of mischief) while we’re not married. The women in Korea tend to be quite tolerant… it’s some of the young guys who have an anti-white attitude.

  2. yobbo Says:

That’s what I meant by the “racial purity police”. Has anyone ever said anything to HH while you two were out and about?

  3. I don’t think so. I can’t understand Korean and she has never complained and there has never looked like trouble. Most Koreans are quite polite — even if they don’t like you. I’ve met a few anti-white bigots while I’ve been over here, but not many and not while I’ve been out with other Koreans.

  4. Brendan Halfweeg Says:

You two are forgetting that’s not racism or bigotry unless it is the prejudices of white males. Shame on you.

  5. KJY Says:

What does it matter whether we care about our daughters dating foreigners? We haven’t *done* a damn thing about it. Asian women are manifestly the biggest race-mixers of all time. What more do you want?

(Whites almost never marry outside their race. See http://www.census.gov/population/socdemo/hh-fam/p20-537/2000/tabFG3.txt – almost 97% of married whites are married to other whites, even though 35% of the U.S. population is non-white. Conversely, the Korea Times states that 13.6% of all new marriages in South Korea are to foreigners, even though less than 1% of the population is non-Korean. Who’s exhibiting the racially nationalistic behavior? It sure isn’t us).

  6. I wasn’t complaining about racism. I was just lamenting the hassle of parent-troubles in asia.

    And we’re Australian, not American.

  7. AD Says:

Brendan Halfweeg is worth listening too, even though the name sounds an alias.

  8. Brendan Halfweeg Says:

Brendan Halfweeg is worth listening too, even though the name sounds an alias.

Thanks, it is an unusual name, but in no way an alias. My grandfather was Dutch, hence the surname (it roughly translates to Halfway), and my mother liked the name Brendan after the Irish playwrite Brendan Behan.

My comment above on racism was a light hearted, reactionary one. I don’t take to PC, and anyone can discriminate as much as they like as far as I’m concerned. The fact that discrimination is self defeating is their problem, not mine.

  9. conrad Says:

Actually Yobbo, there is at least something implicit in reverse. At a guess I would think the split between Asian guys going out with white women is 70/30. I’m not sure whether this is some sort of mental thing, or whether more simple things like height discrepancies are accountable for it (women like guys bigger than them, and this constraint is very strong, so a few inches discrepancy is going to make a lot of difference).

JH: I think the problem in Asia isn’t even cultural differences between parents. Its the fact that everyone lives in shitty little apartments with their parents. The thought of having sex in a 1.5 bedroom apartment with my parents listening horrifies me. Personally, I’ve gone out with white women where their parents were not too pleased about this sitatuation, so I don’t think this is unusual. The only place I know where people don’t worry about this is Germany. Weirdos.

KJY: I know the reason! Its because white women look like men, I’m sure. haha.

  10. Patrick Says:

If most white men marry white women, it’s because there aren’t enough asian girls available, not white prejudice. But I don’t believe that 97% figure could possibly apply in Australia.

I went to a wedding yesterday, he was Armenian, she was chinese, and I don’t think there was a pure race couple in the church (except the parents).

  11. hc Says:

Living for a decade in Thailand I think the key thing was that you could basically do what you wanted provided you kept it private. I knew a top executive in Bangkok who had a very well-known hooker as his lady – he eventually married her. The problems with the locals did not stem from the guy’s caucasian wife whom he had dumped or any racism – it was primarily that he did not keep the thing discreet and therefore lost face.

Asia is a chessgame and you are regarded by the locals as a bit of a twit if you leave yourself exposed to future dangerous moves.

  12. Jo T Says:

“One of the unfortunate facts of life for those of us who like Asian girls is that Asian parents are not usually all that keen on the idea of their daughter dating a foreigner.”

Parents (be it Asian or others) are just concerned if their daughter is dating a man of good character, and if he can take care her. It has nothing to do if he is white or not.

  13. yobbo Says:

Parents (be it Asian or others) are just concerned if their daughter is dating a man of good character, and if he can take care her. It has nothing to do if he is white or not.

I’m sorry but that is just flat out untrue.

  14. O Says:

Do you think that HH’s mum would be more tolerable if she had found a Korean guy alone at her daughter’s home? Highly %99 of parents would react in a same way of HH’s cos the matter is their daughter , her safety, not her love life
    Nationality or race doesnt care.
I do agree with Jo T. Nothing to do with being white or red.

  15. Brendan Halfweeg Says:

I think the point Yobbo is making is that if the boyfriend was Korean, then the girl wouldn’t be trying to hide the relationship. If he was Korean and she still hid the relationship, then the surprise of finding a young man in her apartment would be similar. However, becasue of pressure to please her parents, it is less likely that she would hide a Korean boyfriend and been able to condition her parents into accepting their premarital relationship. Just because parents may come around to a child’s decision, does not decrease the child’s apprehension in revealing their life choices.

  16. conrad — HH lives alone. Her mum was just dropping around to drop off some fruit.

HH’s mum wasn’t worried about her safety. She was upset that HH had a guy staying at her house and doubly upset because she didn’t tell her.

In this case it wasn’t race-based… but it’s simply untrue to say that no parents care about race. Plenty do.

  17. And Brendan — HH wasn’t hiding the relationship. I’d met her mum before and we’d all gone to the DMZ together. She has no problem with me being white. What HH was hiding was having a guy at the house.

There are plenty of racists here, but that wasn’t the problem on this occasion.

  18. Brendan Halfweeg Says:

I’d met her mum before and we’d all gone to the DMZ together.

That’s pretty extreme, having to go to a demilitarised zone to meet your girlfriend’s parents ;)

Point taken. Boy in house = bad for many parents of young women, irrelevent of race.

  19. conrad Says:

You’re a lucky man JH. If she owns her own flat in Seoul, she’s probably a good investment oppurtunity :). I agree with you that some parents care about race. I know only too well unfortunately.

Just out of interest, most people in Asia think that Korean guys are the most sexest guys in Asia. I had a Chinese friend whose sister married one, and all her parents would say about him is that they hope he doesn’t beat her (!). Is it the case that Korean women think Korean men are generally sexest? or is this just the rest-of-Asia perception?

  20. I don’t know how people rate Korean men.

But regarding domestic violence… I understand that is a bit of a problem in some parts. A friend of mine was teaching english in Seoul. One of his boy students hit one of the girl students and the teacher said to him “never hit a girl”. The boy asked why. The teacher said “well, your dad doesn’t hit your mum does he”… and the boy said “yes he does!”

  21. jimmythespiv Says:

Does anyone remember the classic Seinfeld episode – “The Chinese Woman” ?

This was all about a woman called Donna Chang, who was white, but aped some westernised Chinese mannerisms (or at least stereotypes). Anyway, during the course of the show, both Kramer and Jerry said that they “dug” Asian women. Elaine accuses Jerry of being a racist for this comment – to which Jerry replies “If I like their race, how can I be a racist ?”

  23. Beck Says:

Asian parents wanting their kids to date their own kind? Nah, I don’t agree with that either. My mother (and even my grandmother) told me to stay away from Asian men – which suits me fine as I don’t find Asian guys attractive.

But I do believe that they assume the worst of caucasian guys (even my parents despite their encouragement of me hooking up with an Aussie) i.e if their daughter dates a caucasian, they automatically assume that she is sleeping with him – which is true in most cases anyway but that’s another point :) Whereas, they tend to give Asian guys the benefit of the doubt.

Im from Dubai, am living 9studying) in London and have met this korean girl whos only ben here for 6 months now but is also doing a degree for another 2 years so she’ll be around. Ive met a lot of her korean friends and we get on quite well. She went back to Korea for Christmas holiday and came with some korean alchohol for me. Anyway, i asked her if she told her parents about me and she said not yet-i wasnt surprised (i mena weve now been together for four months) , but she is an extremely classy and good looking girl and i adore her. I must admit that i never thought i would find asian girls let alone black girls attractive-its just not my cup of tea. She is however, 24 and i am 21 and weve talked about staying together for a while seeing as we both are quite into each other. I havent told my parents (my father is originally from Kuwait and my mother is from Iran) I would love to marry her but obviously im too young, maybe im just infatuated with her because she is diffrent?

  25. FirstIraqThenChirac Says:

The problem with that Asian men have with us white guys dating Asian girls in Asia (I’ve never dated an Asian in Oz) is that we are giving them (the men) a run for their money.

Before, when there were no foreigners to compete with for the babes, Asian men could get away with all sorts of crap — mistresses, second wives, massage palours, hookers , etc.

I’ve lived in VN for over 2 years and I’ve seen hundreds of groups of Vnese men stroll into a xoa bop (massage place) after a few beers. Students ( I teach English) have often offered take me out for a root at their favourite cathouse.

Most Go-Go bars outside the main tourist areas in Thailand dont have a single foreigner in them.

Asian women realise that they have less chance of being cheated on by a western guy than an Asian mate. The women in VN aren’t even allowed to complain (by both sides of the family) when the wife catches the husband rooting the maid.

Yes, there are many women in Asia who want a foreigner for their money or passport, but thankfully most of these golddiggers stick to the ancient sex tourists who whore themselves into a heart attack in Bangkok.

As for the parents, they are worried about what the neighbours think and the potential Asian suitor is terrified that a man who had is bride before marriage (Asian or Westerner) had a bigger weapon than he did.

My final point is dont forget that most Asian cultures give Hitler a run for his money in the racism stakes (Vnese are awesome in this respect though — great people)

  26. Yobbo Says:

There’s no argument that racism in asia is rampant. The trick is to not be upset by it. Foreigners have a bad name everywhere but it’s not hard to rise above it because asian people (and parents) don’t believe that foreigners are intrinsically bad. They just need convincing otherwise. And the racism works both ways because curiosity affords you more opportunities to meet girls.

  27. FirstIraqThenChirac Says:

The main point I was trying to make wasn’t about racism, it was about competition.

  28. monaro Says:

O.K. you almost had me there. I almost bit. I almost thought that site was for real – until I read this:

North Korea: the most successful nation on Earth?
Pros: Let’s see, there’s no black peeplez, no mexicans or other latrinos, no whites and jews screwing our women and pumping out mongrel beasts with them, no arabs, no indians, no injuns, no southeast Asians, no feminists, no fags, no immigration, no American military base, and no bowing down to foreign interests. Sounds good to me.

Cons: bad economy, food crises that have resulted in starvation.

The economy is only one aspect of a country. And although many North Koreans have indeed starved from food crises, the population’s growing anyway. The fertility rate for North Korea is nearly TWICE as high as that for the South (2.1 vs. 1.27). South Korea is also facing a glut of racial half-breeds and interethnic marriages with people from Vietnam and other similar countries. They’ll eventually go down the toilet unless they change course.

North Korea: the last real nation on Earth. $2,000 per-capita GDP and all.

Clearly an elaborate hoax as no one could be that far to the right of Joey Goebbels whilst maintaining the ability to string sentences together.

I suppose it is the same as the dumb skips who frequent Japanese sushi bars in Sydney which feature the Imperial flag of Japan which signifies “you will be starved to death in Sandakan, Northern Borneo Corporal Strop, so hand over your dosh”.
These sushi places are now mostly Korean owned because Australia is slim pickings sine the dollar was devalued for the mining industry.

My Korean ex-girlfriend was heir to about $100 million. She is dying of terminal cancer. I was not allowed to visit her in hospital becuase I am a dumb skip professor, but I was allowed to meet her at internet cafes for online gaming after her diagnosis.

And she has no sadness about it, for her it is just another issue to deal with. Beware my friends of dating Asian girls who have no status in N.America, they my just want your passport not your love.

Hi FirstIraqThenChirac – Hmmm, interesting comment. I am Vietnamese and every Vietnamese woman that I know that is still living in VN (family and family friends) always tell their husbands that they would cut his you-know-what off if he ever cheated. My aunt even kicked her ex off a bridge after publicly berating him for his “extra-curricular” activities with other women.

I’ve never heard of this rule of not being allowed to complain…

  39. FirstIraqThenChirac Says:

Vnese men are better to their women than every teacher I know who taught in Korea has said about Korean men, but come on.

Of course the Vnese women you know say that they’d cut their man’s dick off, but how many actually do it?

First, I’ve met and heard of a few women who have caught their man rooting another woman, and these poor girls have copped a beating because they dare to object. The usual explaination — “I am a man!”.

Most women who have been cheated on here want to divorce the arsehole, but both families will use shame to get the woman to back off. After all, having a beaten-up daughter is better than having a divorced daughter, because the former can be kept under raps.

Having said that, toi yeu Viet Nam va yeu Nguoi Viet Nam, but some Vnese men get on my fucking tits. Plus, over here it’s us Nuoc Nguoi who are supposed to be the lecherous ones, but I see 50 massages palours without a single word of English on the signage to every 1 that hopes to get some business from foreigners.

  40. Beck Says:

Well, I guess my family and their friends must be the exception to the rule.

Women in my family are far more dominant than the males. I’ve known of three women who have physically hurt and divorced their husbands for cheating. They are women from my mother’s generation too.

But you have probably lived in the country longer than I have so that is a real shame to hear that a lot women have to suffer in silence.

It means that the mum of HH is surprised and of course angry why is there a man in an apartment of unmarried woman(not lady cause not a ….). It means globalizing with other country/race. Say what you say and it will boomeraaang unto you and me.

  53. princess josie Says:

So in the event that “racial” divides cease to deter you from being with the one you love, bureaucratic divides will step in as you decide to join in the bonds of holy matrimony (1,2,3…ohhh). If your girlfriend/bride-to-be is in an Asian country (or any other country) you will need to provide proof of your relationship to the OZ government so they accept your union as genuine and allow you to live in OZ as man and wife (ie 1990′s movie ‘Green Card’ with the ugly french actor whos name I cannot spell).

A word of warning, if you decide to print chat logs as proof of your relationship and you do it from the office DO NOT forget to check your default printer! I cannot stress this strongly enough. The said logs may end up at an interstate office frightening the bejesus out of anyone who comes across them (namely me). Nuff said, I’m far too delicate to cope with personal predilections of myself let alone others!!

p.s ‘Racial’ is highlighted because I dislike the term immensley. Race is a term people have constructed to classifly each other. C’mon guys, were all human! I have to go chant now.
