Your Cat Wants Emule

Slate argues that internet porn prevents rape:

Similarly, psychologists have found that male subjects, immediately after watching pornography, are more likely to express misogynistic attitudes. But as professor Kendall points out, we need to be clear on what those experiments are testing: They are testing the effects of watching pornography in a controlled laboratory setting under the eyes of a researcher. The experience of viewing porn on the Internet, in the privacy of one’s own room, typically culminates in a slightly messier but far more satisfying experience—an experience that could plausibly tamp down some of the same aggressions that the pornus interruptus of the laboratory tends to stir up.

This probably won’t strike much of a chord with the “rape is not about sex” crowd, but it could be an idea for how to keep the prowling cats at bay.

So does this mean we can expect Ask The Imam to start up an XXX rated section?

Similar logic would suggest that afforable prostitution would prevent rape.

Sydney has prostitution that wouldn’t have been beyond Bilal Skaf’s financial reach.

I’m not an expert, but I believe rape isn’t just about sex. And offenders had better not try claiming that they rape because they can’t get laid.

There are both sexual and violent dimensions to most rapes. The Sydney gang rapists are likely to have been of the profile referred to as the “power-assertive” rapist. Description:

The power-assertive rapist: This is argued to be the most common type of rapist, accounting for about 40 percent of all reported rapes. Wishing to be an alpha male, he tends to value machismo and physical aggression, and often rapes victims that he meets in places like bars, where he may pose as, or be, an authority figure. Power-assertive rapists rarely target specific people for rape and, while not intending to kill their victims, often traumatize and humiliate them.

Pretty accurate, you’d have to say.

Is that description online, or in dead trees? What other descriptions do they have?

  5. chrisjv Says:

You can find these descriptions all over the net. They’re originally from a book by a psychologist. The above was copied from the Wikipedia article on rapists, where you can read about the three other types. Sex is the primary motivating factor for two of them, while the other two are primarily sex, with power/aggression thrown in.

Er, primarily power/aggression with sex thrown in, I mean.
